Mathematics is taught across the Key Stages in four specialist rooms which are well resourced and have recently been redecorated and re-equipped. Year 7 is mixed ability and from then until Year 11, girls are setted.
At Key Stage 3 girls study the National Curriculum: Number and Algebra, Shape and Space, Data Handling and Using and Applying. In Year 8 and Year 9 girls who are gifted and talented at Mathematics can take part in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge in Tonbridge. There they can compete against 30 others Kent schools. There are 4 sections such as a ‘Maths Relay’, a ‘Crossnumber’ and completing sequences.
At GCSE, the Edexcel Mathematics syllabus develops and extends the work covered at KS3. Coursework is 20% of the final mark and is assessed through two pieces, one in Year 10 and one in Year 11. The first is a data handling project and the second is an investigative piece of work taking two weeks. There are two final examination papers, worth the remaining 80%, on number, algebra, shape and space and data handling, one of which is a non-calculator paper.
GCSE Statistics is also available to Year 10s.
At A Level girls also follow the Edexcel course. At AS Level there are two Pure units and one Statistics unit. At A2 Level, students take two further Pure units and another application unit, either Decision Mathematics or Statistics. The majority of the lesson time is spent working together and developing new topics and methods. Students are expected to participate in discussion and suggest methods for solving problems.
Mathematics becomes more challenging and interesting at A Level. There is a great deal of algebra and calculus, which require confidence in algebraic manipulation and a high level of concentration.
There is also the option of Double Mathematics in the Sixth Form.
