At AS and A2 pupils follow the OCR (Salters) course.
The presentation of material in a Salters course is unique. Difficult ideas are presented in stages, allowing students to develop confidence through the course. The material is presented to show how chemistry is used and what chemists are doing now. Chemical priciples are taught through the topics listed in the assessment schedule below; these are desighed to emphasise relevance and increase interest.
Material is introduced through "Storylines" which place chemistry in a modern context. This is supported by practical activities, data analysis and an "Ideas" text summarizing chemical principles. A wide variety of tasks are set in class and for private study.
The Units are:
1. The Elements of Life; Developing Fuels
2. From Minerals to Elements; The Atmosphere; The Polymer Revolution
3. Open Book paper; Experimental Skills
4. What's a Medicine?; Designer Polymers; Engineering Proteins; The Steel Story
5. Aspects of Agriculture; Colour By Design; The Oceans; Medicines By Design; Visiting the Chemical Industry
