At AS and A2 pupils follow the OCR course.

Students learn about the cells that are the basic structural units of living things. They then develop their understanding of cell processes in plants and animals, and then learn about the biological molecules from which they are made. The link between structure and function is emphasised throughout, and students complete set practical tasks during both AS and A2 years.

Theory is taught largely by group discussion, stimulated by variety of resources including DVD animations and film, practical laboratory work and ecological study. Background reading and preparation for the lesson are essential to enable the student to participate fully in class and to complete assignments.

ADVICE

Students contemplating taking the Advanced Level Biology course should be confident with GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics to be able to succeed. The learning in this subject stongly emphasises the molecular and chemical basis of life. Statistical techniques are used to interpret data. Biology is recommended (combined with Chemistry) for most medical, veterinary, horticultural and agricultural courses. Advanced Level Biology will also provide a useful educational background for those not intending to study it at a higher level.
